Is had a clause or phrase?

"Had" is a verb. It's not a clause or phrase.

Here's why:

* Clauses have a subject and a verb. For example, "He had a great time."

* Phrases are groups of words that don't have a subject and a verb. For example, "in the park" or "running quickly."

"Had" alone doesn't have a subject. It needs a subject to form a complete thought.
