What is the latin word for steel?

There isn't a single, direct Latin word for "steel" in the modern sense. Ancient Romans didn't have a concept of steel as a distinct material like we do today. They primarily used iron, bronze, and other alloys.

However, they did have various terms for iron that could be translated as "steel" in certain contexts:

* Ferrum: The most common Latin word for iron. It could sometimes refer to a high-quality iron, approaching what we consider steel today.

* Chalybs: This word was used for a type of steel produced in the region of Chalybia (modern Turkey). It was known for its strength and was often used for weapons.

It's important to remember that "steel" is a modern concept and the Romans wouldn't have understood it in the same way we do.
