What does the word cibola mean?

"Cibola" is a Spanish word that likely originates from the Zuni word Shiwula, meaning "seven cities".

The name gained notoriety in the 16th century when Spanish conquistadors were searching for the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola, which were said to be rich in gold and other treasures.

While the Seven Cities of Cibola were never found, the name stuck to the region and is still used to refer to Cibola National Forest, which is located in western New Mexico.
