Where did the word bilingual come from?

The word "bilingual" comes from Latin. It is a combination of two words:

* bi- meaning "two"

* lingua meaning "tongue" or "language"

Therefore, "bilingual" literally translates to "two tongues" or "two languages."

The word was first used in the 16th century and has been in use ever since to describe someone who can speak two languages fluently.
