* The dog barked loudly at the mailman. (The adverb "loudly" modifies the verb "barked".)
You can also use phrases to modify verbs:
* He walked with a limp. (The prepositional phrase "with a limp" modifies the verb "walked".)
* She sang in a high voice. (The prepositional phrase "in a high voice" modifies the verb "sang".)
* They arrived after the party had started. (The prepositional phrase "after the party had started" modifies the verb "arrived".)
In addition to adverbs and phrases, verbals (infinitives, participles, and gerunds) can also modify verbs:
* He tried to sing. (The infinitive "to sing" modifies the verb "tried".)
* The singing bird soared high. (The participle "singing" modifies the noun "bird".)
* He enjoyed singing. (The gerund "singing" modifies the verb "enjoyed".)
Remember that a verb phrase can be modified by adverbs, phrases, and verbals, too.
