What language does the word alcohol come from?

The word "alcohol" comes from Arabic.

It derives from the Arabic word "al-kuḥl", which originally referred to a fine powder of antimony sulfide used as a cosmetic for darkening the eyelids.

Over time, the word "al-kuḥl" began to be used for any fine powder, including those made from distilling substances. Eventually, it came to specifically refer to distilled spirits, and eventually evolved into the word "alcohol" in English.
