Where does the word iguana come from?

The word "iguana" comes from the Taíno language, spoken by the indigenous people of the Caribbean islands.

Specifically, it originates from the Taíno word "iwana" which referred to these large lizards.

When the Spanish explorers arrived in the Caribbean, they adopted the Taíno word and brought it back to Europe, where it eventually became the English word "iguana."
