Is the word alone a Latin word?

The word "alone" is not directly derived from Latin. It has a more complex history:

* Old English: The word "alone" comes from the Old English word "an" (meaning "one") and the word "lāne" (meaning "lane, path, way").

* Meaning Evolution: The combination of "an" and "lāne" suggests being on a path by oneself, which ultimately evolved to mean "being without company."

While Latin had words for "one" (unus) and "way" (via), the combination and evolution of meaning leading to "alone" happened in English.
