What do the prefixes in- and im- mean?

The prefixes in- and im- both mean "not" or "the opposite of".

However, they are used in slightly different contexts:

* in- is used before words beginning with a consonant sound, like:

* inaccurate (not accurate)

* incomplete (not complete)

* insecure (not secure)

* im- is used before words beginning with a vowel sound or an "m" sound, like:

* imperfect (not perfect)

* impossible (not possible)

* immoral (not moral)

Important Note:

While the rule about consonant and vowel sounds is a good guideline, there are exceptions. Some words may use in- before a vowel sound (e.g., inability) or im- before a consonant sound (e.g., impassioned).

It's always best to check a dictionary for the correct prefix usage in specific words.
