Who coined the word bioethics?

The term "bioethics" was coined by Van Rensselaer Potter, an oncologist and biochemist, in his 1970 book "Bioethics: Bridge to the Future."

While the concept of ethical considerations in biological and medical fields existed before, Potter's work was instrumental in formalizing the term and establishing bioethics as a distinct field of study. He saw bioethics as a necessary bridge between the life sciences and the humanities, advocating for a "new ethic" that would guide the use of technology in a way that respected both human life and the environment.
